Elsie Violet is a beautiful Katherine class barge built by Trent Valley Boats using a Branson Pre-cut steel kit procured in 2003/4, and brought to life and launched with RCD “D” and BSS certificates in 2008. She has since cruised the waterways and coasts of northeastern and eastern England as well as inland and coastal waters of Holland, Belgium and France. She has been based on the Thames since 2022.
The folding wheelhouse is constructed in solid iroko timber with double-glazed tinted windows and aluminium insulated roof panels. The fore and aft windscreens can be lowered independently of the sides and roof for cabrio style ventilation. Elsie Violet boasts a mahogany Vetus hydraulic wheel on a raised steering plinth to allow for better visibility when cruising, She has single lever engine and gearbox control and a host of instruments and gauges needed to navigate her, as well as 2 VHF radios – Ocean DSC/ATIS switching with speed, position and AIS display, and Lawrence DSC/ATIS switching with speed and position display, 24v and 12v switched fused panels, power isolating switches, bow thruster and winch controls, and a removable chart table with shelves and locker space below that holds major AC controls and consumer unit.
Raised seats in the aft provide passengers with a clear view and there are large storage lockers below.
Access from the wheelhouse sternwards leads to a light and airy 'owners' cabin comprising king-sized bed athwartships with drawers, shelves, lockers and access to the weed hatch below. There is also a large full height hanging locker with mirrors on the doors, shelf/dressing table with drawer and locker below, a skylight/escape hatch leading to the aft deck,and an en-suite head consisting shower, electric flush toilet to holding tank, basin with cupboard below, and electric extractor fan. Grey water drains to a holding tank beneath which automatically pumps overside.
Forward of the wheelhouse is the galley and utility area containing a 4 burner hob, oven and grill, fridge with ice box, 900w microwave, stainless steel sink, mixer tap and drainer, and a Peninsula worktop with plenty of storage including a pull-out larder and utensils rack. A sideboard with drawers and cupboards, as well as locker space, Candy washing machine, and White Knight dryer stands to port. To starboard is another heads with shower, airing cupboard with calorifier below, electric flush toilet to holding tank, wash hand basin, and extractor fan.
In the saloon there is a L shaped settee with Alcantara faux suede upholstery that converts to a double berth, 2 free-standing armchairs, removable folding table, flat screen TV / video disc player, Humax Satellite decoder and recorder, Sony radio / disc player and stereo speakers, a solid fuel Valor Arden 5kw stove with matching steel tiled surround and a seat to starboard with pull-out fuel bunker,. There is also a 4' x 3' loading hatch in the coachroof, 4 deck hatches and sun and insect blinds.
The fore cabin consists double bed 5' wide at the head with storage beneath, shelf / dressing table with cupboard below, small table with mirror, hanging locker, shelves, and storage for 2 folding chairs. An escape hatch leads to the foredeck.
Hot water and additional heating is provided by immersion and Eberspacher Hydronic 5 kw diesel heater. Safety features include forward looking CCTV, Navman automatic pilot, navigation lights, Echomax radar reflector, stainless steel guardrails connecting with fixed steel rail around stern, grab rails on all cabin roofs, 25 kg Brittany anchor plus chain, winch controls on foredeck, throwing line, automatic man overboard light, 2 horseshoe lifebuoys, trumpet horn, and all accessories needed to safely take to the water.
Elsie Violet's Boat Safety Scheme certificate is valid until 2026.
